Parent’s anxiety around the best way to help their children with literacy learning at home is real, but where do they start?

How do they know what’s effective?

Literacy Sense offers parents a solution with a range of books that provide simple, practical ideas and tips and hints, for use from birth to middle primary.

The key is in using the senses: reading and writing with the Ears, not just the eyes. Encouraging listening for the story, the language structure and the sounds to match the letters, in equal measure, is the key.

Unlock the secrets of teaching your child the joy of reading and writing: with cheers – not tears.

About Wendy Barr

About Wendy

Wendy Barr is an Australian teacher with over 40 years’ experience; more than half of this in literacy intervention. She is passionate about helping parents to optimise their child’s reading potential by sharing her knowledge and techniques in a parent-friendly way, in her debut book, ‘Reading Sense.’

Wendy’s key message, throughout this book, is to ‘read with your EARS, as well as your eyes.’

This idea was the catalyst for beginning her foray into helping parents. Initially, she produced a short and simple photo-story book featuring her pet Puggy and his love of carrots!

There are more than 7 Puggy books in the series now, with many more, in the pipeline.

Each book highlights Puggy’s quirky antics in his everyday life.  Featured at the back, is a phonemic activity page, with instructions to parents on how they can help their child, make discoveries about the words in the story.

‘Reading Sense’ and the ‘So Puggy’ books aim to give parents the confidence to help their child get excited about reading.

Wendy, Colin and Puggy live in the Dandenong Ranges in Victoria, Australia: ideal for growing carrots!

Your reward will be a stress-free, shared, joy of language.
